Chichicastenango is probably the most interesting place in Guatemala for experiencing the modern day Maya people. Just a few minutes walk from the church of Santo Tomás in the center of Chichicastenango, there is a wooded hill and top this hill is an ancient rock [abaj] with a carved face, known all over Guatemala as Pascual Abaj. Here we will be guided in ceremony by Mayan shaman Diego Mix.

DAY 8. THURSDAY, DEC 9. CHICHICASTENANGO Market day in Chichicastenango! Chichicastenango is home to what is surely the most colorful native market in North and Central America, perhaps in all the Americas. Market days are Sundays and Thursdays, and draw not only the K'iche' Maya of the surrounding region, but vendors from all over Guatemala, representing many of Guatemala's linguistic groups such as Mam, Ixil, Kaqchikel and others, each hawking his or her products in a riotous cacophony of color, dialects and costumes, smoke, and smells. This town in the mountains of El Quiche has been, since pre-Hispanic times, one of the largest trading centers in the Maya area.

In the afternoon we depart Chichi for Lake Atitlan.

OvernightPosada Don Rodrigo Panajachel Hotel in Lake Atitlan. (B D)

DAY 9. FRIDAY, DEC 10. LAKE ATITLAN

DAY 10. SATURDAY, DEC 11. IXIMCHE

After breakfast we will depart Lake Atitlan to Iximche, where we will have a special closing Ceremony. Iximche, in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya and consists of several plazas surrounded by temples, palaces, and ceremonial platforms. Part of the ruins were explored and excavated from 1960 to 1972, other parts are still buried under lush vegetation.
