The consensus from the scientists currently studying this phenomenon is that the orbs are plasma like balls of subtle energy - but an energy that can now be detected by physical means. They come in all shapes and sizes ranging from a few inches to several feet across and in various colours, from white, to blue, green, rose and even gold. Sometimes they appear alone but have also been photographed in their hundreds. In fact, Pippa Sayer was astonished recently to see hundreds of orbs in her pictures taken at the Natural History Museum in London. Terri Caldwell, a healer from Belbroughton in Worcestershire who has seen orbs in friends and her own pictures for several years, says ‘To my mind the orbs are the spirit world simply going about their business, and they are definitely attracted to locations where people are learning. I believe we are all spirits having a physical experience, and when we die, our energy field which carries all the information about us continues on. Orbs are certainly not to be feared’. Professor Alberto Villoldo, an American based medical anthropologist, psychologist and shaman who has studied ancient traditions in the Amazon for more than 25 years, says ‘The medicine men and women of the Andes have known about Orbs for thousands of years, and I have pictures taken at ancient prayer ceremonies, in which you can see huge group soul orbs literally absorbing the energy being emitted by the prayers which the elders are offering in their memory. Meanwhile, during lectures on Orbs, Ledwith has been approached by people who state they are communicating telepathically with the spirits within the spheres, whilst others claim to see the faces of dearly departed loved ones. ‘There is no validation as yet for such claims,’ Ledwith cautions. ‘To say the orbs are only spirits of the deceased is an oversimplification, and far more research needs to be done. I believe they could be many things. Indeed, they may turn out to be the spirits of those who have passed on; or, as some spiritual teachers state, they might be spirits waiting to be born into a physical body. They may also be, or represent, a host of other intelligences, from nature spirits, to beings of pure energy that have never incarnated in a physical form. There are literally hundreds of types of Orbs.’ Other Orb enthusiasts agree. Katie Hall, an artist, and her partner John Pickering, an illustrator based in the Lake District, took their first orb pictures in 2002 and, like Heinemann, they had no idea what the spheres were but agree that Orb photography can quickly become quite addictive. ‘After we had taken hundreds of pictures of Orbs in multiple environments, after about 18 months we also began to see other types of beings. Some looked like archetypal fairies, whilst others we considered to be angels or nature spirits. We also have plasmoid-like energies on film which seem to be the orbs taking various shapes.’ What started as a hobby has now turned into a full time job, and in their book Beyond Photography, O Books, £12-99, Hall and Pickering share their amazing pictures and stories.  Orbs in the garden, photo by Katie Hall & John Pickering As to the Orbs’ purpose, Ledwith comments that audiences regularly ask, ‘What are the orbs here to do for us ?’ and says this shows an egocentric attitude. ‘The orbs have always been here and are an everyday part of reality as much as we are. Their world may be as real as ours, but simply exists on different frequencies. If you change your TV Channel, you switch to different band frequencies which contain different information. It’s illogical to think that what we cannot see is not real, because the human eye is only able to receive such a very narrow part of the light spectrum. Horses and dogs, for instance, can see spectra of light that are invisible to us. We have tended to dismiss anything we cannot see as paranormal - ghostly or whatever, which is absurd.’ WHAT ELSE? Not only can orbs travel at lightening speeds, they also have the ability to swirl into various shapes such as vortices of energy that look like mini tornados. Ledwith and many others, including John Pickering, have filmed the orbs on digital camcorders and seen the orbs change shape into plasma-like ghostly figures. And when orb pictures are enlarged, Heinemann and Ledwith found that each orb reveals an interior structure that appears to be unique to the particular orb or spirit, whilst others have segments missing from them, giving the appearance of looking like skeletons. Ledwith surmises that this may happen when the orb has not yet fully manifested into a frequency level that the camera can capture. Research has also shown that orbs can change size and shape very quickly and they emit a specific type of light known as coherent light. Basically this means they emit laser like light in very specific directions, which Heinemann states could only occur if the orbs choose to do this, and re-iterated they are intelligent beings. He has also photographed myriad sizes of orbs clearly visible near healers and their hands – and suggests that orbs somehow assist in the spiritual healing process. Astonishingly, Heinemann also has pictures of thought form orbs which appear as bright balls of light by the head of experienced and highly focused meditators. CAN ORBS HARM US? ‘From all the hundreds of thousands of pictures that have been taken,’ says Heinemann ‘ and the huge amount of data now being gathered, I would agree with Dr Ledwith that these other worldly dimensional beings, whether they be highly evolved spirit beings, nature spirits or whatever - have always been there. They seem happy to observe us, and I believe that many of the light emitting orbs somehow help in the spiritual healing process. Regarding psychics who claim to communicate with the spirits within the orbs, this is only conjecture which has not yet been scientifically verified.’ It’s worth noting that scientists have also seen dark orbs at the sites of supposed hauntings but found that dark orbs absorb light, whereas the coloured orbs emit light. ‘Globally there has been a huge increase in the incidence of light emitting orbs, whilst dark ones are very rare,’ says Heinemann reassuringly. He has never seen dark orbs in the presence of their lighter counterparts, which leads him to conclude that dark spirits do not feel welcome near the light emitting orbs. Darth Vader had obviously better watch out! Heinemann summarises, ‘Research into orbs is in it’s infancy; but the photographs of these spirit emanations offer evidence – as close to scientific proof as we have ever come, in proving the existence of the spiritual reality.’ HOW TO TAKE PICTURES OF ORBS FOR YOURSELF The secret, say all Orb enthusiasts and scientists alike, is to firstly “ask” the orbs to appear. Then begin taking dozens of digital pictures in quick succession in the same place with the same camera at the same time daily, and then you will be able to see for yourself that the orbs sometimes appear and sometimes won’t . Not only may they move, but you may also see the same orb change size. The overall consensus is that orbs appear more regularly at happy gatherings such as weddings, christenings, spiritual type meetings and places of learning. Using a flash seems to be a necessity even in daylight, as Dr Ledwith believes we see the orbs through the process known in physics as fluorescence. He says the camera flash sparks this fluorescence process that makes the orbs visible to the camera. Have patience, and with trial and error you will soon realise when you are seeing a genuine orb rather than dust particles, reflections or droplets of water. Apparently the most convincing examples are when you see an orb eclipsed by an object between the camera and the orb. WANT TO KNOW MORE?
